Richmond Police ID victim in fatal Chamberlayne Avenue crash

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Richmond Police are investigating a fatal accident on Chamberlayne Avenue in Richmond.

According to police, the accident happened Tuesday around 6:08 p.m. in the 2000 block of Chamberlayne Avenue.

Authorities say that a Ford Expedition SUV was traveling southbound on Chamberlayne when it crossed the media into oncoming traffic before breaking through the wall of a building. The driver, who police identified as 43-year-old  Richard T. Cunningham, of the 5200 of Castlewood Road in Chesterfield County, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Richmond Fire Department crew removed the vehicle from the building due to structural concerns, then stabilized the damaged wall. No one was inside the building at the time of the crash.

The RPD Crash Team responded to the scene, where they took measurements and interviewed witnesses.

Two blocks of Chamberlayne were closed for several hours as a crash team unit investigated the wreck.
