NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A mother in Newport News is wanted on a felony abduction charge for allegedly taking her 11-month-old daughter last month. The mother reportedly does not have custody of the child.

Lou Thurston of the Newport News Police Department says the suspect may be in the Richmond area.

According to police, officers were called to the 600 block of Aqua Vista Drive for a report of a missing person last month.

A relative of 11-month-old Za’kiylah Miessence Ashlock told officers that the child’s mother, 20-year-old Imani Adrieanna Lester Cogdell, came by to pick her up on March 13 for her weekend visitation.

Police says the officer’s preliminary investigation showed that the relative has full custody of the Ashlock.

However, the relative says she has not been able to make contact with Cogdell, and does not know where she and the child are.

A warrant has been taken out, charging Cogdell with felony abduction. A summons was also issued on April, charging her with custody/visitation violation.

Police are continuing to investigate this case.

Anyone with information on  the whereabouts of Cogdell or Za’kiylah Ashlock is asked to call Newport News Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
