Getting to know the Flying Squirrels: Richmond’s own Matt Winn

RICHMOND, Va (WRIC) — The Richmond Flying Squirrels official opening day at the Diamond is a week away!

A new season means a new team, and 8Sports anchor Chip Brierre talks to some members of the roster to better get to know them for the fans.

Today, Matt Winn from right here in Richmond, Va. is in the spotlight. He went to J.R. Tucker High School in the west end of Richmond before attending Virginia Military Institute from 2011-2015.

The 23-year old Winn (6’1″, 220 lbs) played catcher for the Keydets, being named a 2015 Louisville Slugger third team All-American, and is the first VMI player to make an upperclass AA team (the Flying Squirrels) outright.

Winn was drafted by the San Francisco Giants with the 15th pick in the 14th round of last year’s MLB Draft.

He will be in contention for the daily starting position behind home plate with Jeff Arnold and Eliezer Zambrano this season for the Richmond Flying Squirrels.
