Petersburg fugitive arrested, charged in fatal hit-and-run

PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) — Petersburg police have arrested the man wanted in connection to last week’s fatal hit-and-run.

Kermit N. Johnson, 56, was arrested Tuesday and charged with felony homicide as a result of last Thursday’s hit-and-run that resulted in the death of 55-year-old Ross Epps, Jr. Authorities say Johnson was also charged in connection to a hit-and-run that occurred in January.

Last Thursday, March 31, officers were called to the 1600 block of Youngs Road for reports of a person down. Arriving units made contact with a victim who they identified as Epps Jr. and was suffering from injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle. He was transported to Southside Regional Medical Center when he succumbed to his injuries.

Petersburg police spokesperson Esther Hyatt said tips from the public were crucial in locating Johnson.
