COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.(KXRM) — Saturday, the world is lighting up blue for Autism Awareness Day.
According to the CDC, one out of every 68 children had autism in 2012–the same rate as in 2010. The report also found autism rates vary widely between communities and more research needs to be done.
“We do need to increase awareness for many reasons,” Kaitlin Varriano of the Alpine Autism Center said. “We can definitely research more. We need more places to provide therapy.”
Thousands of homes, landmarks, hotels, and schools will turn on blue lights throughout the entire month of April to honor those living with autism.
