‘Sad papaw’ makes hundreds of friends at Oklahoma cookout

PURCELL, Okla. (WRIC/WLS) — Social media has turned an Oklahoma granddad into a celebrity online. It’s all thanks to five grandchildren who couldn’t be bothered to show up for dinner one day.

Kenny “Papaw” Harmon likely won’t be eating alone anytime soon. Harmon, an Oklahoma native, hosted a cookout Saturday for the public to join him for a meal.

Papaw is so popular, hundreds showed up just to get a picture with him. Fans came from Houston, Dallas and even Australia just to see Papaw.

“It’s hard to get used to it,” Harmon says. “I haven’t been able to wrap my head around this thing yet.”

Harmon’s new-found fame is thank to a tweet that went viral.

Last week, his granddaughter tweeted that his other grandkids were “no shows” for a dinner he cooked for them. It didn’t long before support began flooding in.

“I guess she touched on the right theme,” Harmon says.

Papaw tells 8News affiliate WLS-TV he’s still trying to wrap his head around all of this, but says he believes that people came to the cookout to remember their own grandparents.

“The theme that comes to me from almost everybody is their grandparents, their great-grandparents, what they want to do now or what they wish they had done before,” Papaw says.
