(WCMH) — The name of a $300 million dollar polar research vessel could be the RRS Boaty McBoatface after the Internet was asked to weigh in.

The National Environment Research Council (NERC) started asking for suggestions last week for the name of its new state-of-the-art vessel, expected to set sail in 2019.

“Today we are launching our campaign to bring our ship to the UK people, asking for their help to find her a name that encapsulates her role at the forefront of UK science. We are excited to hear what the public have to suggest and we really are open to ideas.”

Currently leading the pack of ideas: ‘Boaty McBoatface.’

The overwhelming interest in the contest has caused the voting page to crash periodically.

As is the case for any true Internet sensation, Boaty McBoatface now has a parody Twitter account campaigning on behalf of the name.

No matter the outcome of the vote, the NERC may have the last laugh. The rules of the naming contest say that the organization has the final say on the ship’s name.
