VCU Band Leader wants to ‘Expand the Band’

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (WRIC) — One of the most notable things about VCU Athletics is its pep band, the Peppas. VCU Athletic Bands Director Ryan Kopacsi has made the group into a nationally known act.

Now, Kopacsi says he wants to make a bigger mark on the NCAA Tournament. Current NCAA Tournament rules state that each band may only bring 29 students and one band director. No electronic amplification is permitted. Kopacsi wants to expand that number to 40, and he wants to use electronic amplification.

The band leader believes the higher number will be more inclusive and that the Peppas will be able to put out an even better product with amplified sound.

8Sports Director Mitch Carr is in Oklahoma City and will be following the Rams during their run in the West Region of the NCAA Tournament. Follow him on Twitter and look for highlights and reaction from Friday’s game on 8News at 6 and 11.

HAVOC Haven will also live blog the game here in Richmond.
