SUSSEX COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A 28-year-old woman is dead after her vehicle ran off the Nottoway River Bridge in Sussex County Thursday evening.
According to Virginia State Police, a citizen reported to a trooper at 5:11 p.m. that a vehicle was observed driving off the bridge at 301 near Stony Creek. When troopers arrived to the scene, they found a vehicle fully submerged in water.
After a VSP Search and Rescue team was called, crews located the body of Chaley Markee Brown of the 300 block of Gray Street in Jarratt.
An investigation revealed that a 1999 Lincoln was traveling in the northbound lane of Route 301 when the driver lost control of the vehicle, ran off the road to the right and struck a guardrail. Upon striking the guardrail, the driver overcorrected, ran off the road to the left and struck the railing of the bridge, cause the vehicle to flip over the bridge into the river below.
It is unknown if alcohol played a factor in the crash. The victim was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
