More than half of what Americans eat is ‘ultra-processed’

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCBD) — A new study reveals more than half of all calories in the typical American diet come from ultra-processed foods.

Researchers looked at dietary data from more than 9,000 people.

They found foods like soft drinks, pre-packaged snacks and baked goods, chicken nuggets and instant noodles — made up nearly 60-percent of total calorie intake.

Ultra processed foods also contributed to almost 90% of added sugar consumption.

These added sugars increase the risk of obesity, diabetes and heart disease.
