Henrico County Police officer to be posthumously awarded Medal of Service

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — After a three and a half year battle with stage 4 cancer, Henrico County Police Officer Neil G. Griffin passed away on Tuesday, March 8. He was 45-years-old.

Officer Griffin joined the Henrico County Police force in 1999. He served many roles in the police department and for the past 10 years was a school resource officer at Byrd Middle School.

“Officer Griffin was a role model for his students and colleagues; a dedicated, hard worker; and a friend to everyone he met,” Henrico Police said in a Facebook post. “He will be truly missed not only by his family, police family and friends, but also by all the faculty and students whose lives he touched during the many years he served as the School Resource Officer at Byrd Middle School.”

Today, Officer Griffin is going to be receiving a “Medal of Service Award” for all his work. Fellow police officers, fire and rescue crews, Byrd Middle and county staff as well as life-long friends are expected to be in attendance.
