15-year-old charged with second degree murder in fatal Spotsylvania shooting

SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A 15-year-old has been charged with the murder of a man after a fatal shooting in Spotsylvania County on Tuesday.

Neighbor’s knew something was wrong when they saw sheriff’s cars with lights and sirens flying down a normally quite Towles Mill Road.

Investigators had received a 9-1-1 call about a shooting. When they arrived, they found 36-year-old John Conroy, Jr. dead in the front of the home. He had been shot multiple times.

According to detectives, Conroy was being abusive to his live-in girlfriend when her teenage son intervened.

“The 15-year-old son retrieved a firearm that was somewhere in the immediate vicinity and fired several rounds at Conyer, striking him multiple times,” Captain Jeffery Pearce with the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office said.

On Wednesday, the teen was charged with second-degree murder. He is being held in juvenile detention.

Sheriff’s deputies are still piecing this investigation together. They call the entire situation heartbreaking.

“This is an entire family that has been disrupted and destroyed,” Pearce said. “You have the victim, of course, who lost his life, but you also have a traumatized young man, his mother, all of heir friends and family. It’s a no win no matter how this turns out.”
