State police: 2 teen pedestrians killed after crash in Lunenburg County

LUNENBURG COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal crash involving two pedestrians in Lunenburg County.

The crash occurred at 4:31 a.m., Sunday just outside of Victoria on Route 49, less than a mile north of Route 726.

Police say that a 2014 Ford F-150 truck was traveling south on Route 49 when it came through a thick patch of fog. As the pickup exited the fog, it encountered two male pedestrians walking in the southbound travel lane. The driver was unable to avoid the men and struck them.

Both pedestrians, 19-year-old Alex K. Ferree of Victoria, and 17-year-old Datrail A. Barnes, of Kenbridge, died at the scene. Both Ferree and Barnes were dressed in dark-colored clothing, police said. Based on the trooper’s investigation, the two had a left a friend’s house and were walking home.

The driver of the pickup truck, 48-year-old David E. Wells, of Victoria, was not injured in the crash.

No charges have been placed at this time.

The Virginia State Police Richmond Division Crash Reconstruction Team are assisting with the investigation.
