Slain Virginia officer to be buried in Massachusetts

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WRIC/AP/WWLP) — A Virginia police officer who was shot and killed on her first day on the job is being honored in the western Massachusetts communities where she was born and grew up.

A wake for Officer Ashley Guindon was held on Sunday at the Agawam Funeral Home. A funeral Mass is scheduled for Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, in Springfield. Following the funeral, Guindon will be buried next to her father at St. Thomas the Apostle Cemetery in West Springfield, according to 8News sister station WWLP.

Thousands are expected to say their final goodbyes to Guindon, WWLP reports.

Guindon, a former Marine Corps reservist, was born in Springfield and lived in Agawam before her family moved to New Hampshire. Her uncle is a detective for the West Springfield Police Department.

Guindon was killed Feb. 27 while responding to a domestic argument at a home in Woodbridge, Virginia.

She had been sworn in as a Prince William County police officer the previous day. She was 28.
