HENRICO, Va. (WRIC) — Residents in an eastern Henrico neighborhood are on edge after someone opened fire on their homes over the weekend.
Police are still trying to figure out who pulled the trigger, but believe it may be the result of a fight that escalated out of control.
The bullets flew outside of an apartment complex in the 6000 block of Oakano Drive just after 9 p.m.Sunday night. There was a woman with her fiance and two little kids in the car backing out of a parking spot in front of the building. The gunfire shattered their rear window and sunroof.
“It was a game of inches. You know at any point someone could have been struck by a bullet,” says Lieutenant Chris Eley with Henrico County Police, which is investigating the incident.
A woman who lives in the complex tells 8News she heard four or five gunshots, but was too scared to look out the window and see what was happening. Another resident showed 8News the bullet hole in her wall. The bullet entered her living room, ricocheted off of her entertainment center and flew through a wall into her neighbor’s unit.
Remarkably no one was hurt, but the people who live in the complex want to see someone arrested. A witness who didn’t want to be identified believes the gunfire was in retaliation to a fight that happened out front of the neighborhood earlier in the evening. She explains her sister came out on top in the brawl until two cars rolled up the street and someone inside the vehicles opened fire on the building.
“It’s just sad that people can’t fight,” she said. “Not that people need to fight, that it would escalate to that level after a fight.”
Adds Lieutenant Eley, “Whoever was involved in the earlier altercation could possibly be involved in the incident, but we still need anybody who saw anything to give us a call if they have any information.”
