City residents outraged over mayor’s proposed fee increases

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Mayor Dwight Jones is proposing several fee increases for some basic city services to help plug a current 9$ budget shortfall.

Among the services you could soon be paying more for are trash and leaf pickup, as the mayor is proposing to raise the refuse collection fee from $17.50 to $20 a month.

Leaf pick up was never included before since it was recently discovered the city never even had a line item in the budget for leaf collection.

Regardless, some neighborhoods still haven’t had their leaves picked up, leaving residents outraged over a possible hike for a service they haven’t even received.

Another fee increase proposed by Mayor Jones is raising the hourly parking meter fee from 75 cents to $1.25. Reaction from residents varied. Some told us they thought paying over $1.00 to park for one hour was too much. Others said they don’t mind the increase as long as the money was going towards a good cause.
