Mother and daughter displaced after a fire breaks out in a Richmond apartment

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A mother and one-year-old daughter are displaced after a fire broke out in a Richmond apartment.

The fire broke out Saturday around 9:00 p.m. at an apartment located on North 21 Street.

Crews found flames coming out of the front door when they arrived on scene.

Venice Johnson, mother of the one-year-old baby got out before the home was engulfed with flames.

“I was upstairs and my lights cut off,” Johnson said. “So I’m coming downstairs because I thought it might be the breaker, but I saw the smoke coming from the kitchen so I went upstairs to grab my baby and got out,”

Johnson and her baby will stay with relatives.

The American Red Cross will also be assisting.

No word on the cause of the fire.
