Attic fire in Spotsylvania daycare

SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. — (WRIC) – On February 28, 2016, a fire broke out at the “Always Sonshine Learn and Play” in the 11900 block of Rutherford Drive in Spotsylvania County.

The business owner was on site working, smelled smoke and called 9-1-1. The business was not open at the time.

At 2:47 pm, firefighters arrived to find a light haze of smoke in the building. After further investigation, firefighters found a large fire in the attic.  Moments later the fire broke through the roof. Firefighters had to be evacuated to continue their work from the outside of the structure.


It took 45 firefighters approximately one hour to bring the fire under control. A total of seven engines, two trucks, three ambulances, two specialty support units, a squad unit, six chief officers and a Fire Marshal were involved in controlling the incident.

There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters during the incident.

The Spotsylvania Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause.
