HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Publix Super Markets Inc. confirmed to 8News on Tuesday that it has signed a lease for a store in the greater Richmond area.
The Glen Allen store is expected to be 49,000 square feet and will be located at the northeast corner of Nuckols Road and Twin Hickory Road in Henrico.
Richmond’s west end is already an oasis of supermarkets. Not only is there a Food Lion on Twin Hickory Road, but Short Pump also has a Martin’s, a relatively new Kroger, and don’t forget the huge new Wegman’s being built on West Broad Street.
The looming question is, is there enough room on the block for another supermarket? Publix seems to think so:
The Commonwealth of Virginia is a growing area, known for being a great place to live, and residents who know The Publix brand and our reputation have been asking us to be a part of their community for years. As we’ve continued to grow, we are now in a position where we can use our existing resources to service these new markets, so our entry into Virginia only makes sense. We are excited to add to our growing Publix family.
A grand opening date has yet to be determined, though officials say the Glen Allen store is tentatively planned to open in 2018.
Virginia will mark the company’s seventh state of operation. Currently, Publix has 1,111 stores in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina and North Carolina.
