RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Will Wade remembers exactly which games lost him conference championships while he was running Chattanooga’s basketball program.
“I remember one year we lost the conference championship on a Saturday afternoon in Cullowhee, North Carolina,” Wade said Tuesday morning. “We lost to Western Carolina. Now the standings said we lost to Wofford, but we lost the conference title when we lost to Western.”
Now in his first season at VCU, Wade’s Rams have one eight games in a row and are atop the Atlantic 10 Conference standings with a 5-0 league record. Wade said he didn’t have to do much to keep his team motivated and focused during as conference play continues.
“If we skimp in our daily preparation, just a little, ” Wade said, “We lose, and our guys have seen that.”
Wade at Chattanooga and other stops, he’s learned that conference titles aren’t won just by winning the biggest match ups of the season.
“Everybody gets excited to play the big league games but leagues are won on a Wednesday night on the road against some lower level team, ” Wade said. “That’s how it’s won: winning the games you should win, especially on the road.
VCU plays its next two games at home. Wednesday night the Rams welcome Duquesne, and Saturday St. Bonaventure comes to town.
