CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WRIC) — Today at the 34th annual NASCAR Media Tour, Richmond International Raceway received news it will host one of four exclusive races in the new Xfinity series format, the “Dash 4 Cash.”
The other three tracks to hold this race are Bristol Motor Speedway, Dover International Speedway and Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Drivers will compete in two separate heats, one for odd number qualifiers and another for even number qualifiers, with the winners competing for a $100,000 bonus in the featured Xfinity series race, the Toyotacare 250, on April 23rd.
A driver who wins the “Dash 4 Cash” twice during the season automatically qualifies for the Xfinity series chase, adopting the chase format used in the Spring Cup series.
RIR President Dennis Bickmeier looks at it as, “as a great opportunity from a communications standpoint, from a marketing standpoint.”
International Speedway Corporation Chief Executive Officer Lesa France Kennedy also suggested at the media tour that the Richmond track may be in line for some massive renovation and modernization, simlar to the $400 million Daytona Rising project for Daytona Speedway this past year.
“The NASCAR roots run really deep in Virginia,” says Bickmeier. “It’s our job to keep them going, keep the fans happy, get the next generation engaged as well whether it’s on the drivers’ side, like, ‘Who’s the next Denny Hamlin from this area?'”
