Former, current Petersburg Police officers sue for unpaid overtime

Petersburg, Va. (WRIC) — At least 28 former and current Petersburg Police officers and detectives have filed a class action suit against the city for unpaid overtime.

According to court documents, the “defendant has had knowledge of Virginia’s law enforcement overtime provisions as local news media outlets have widely reported on similar police officer lawsuits against, and settlements paid by, the City of Richmond, Henrico County, the City of Norfolk, the City of Hampton, and other Virginia localities with at least 100 law enforcement employees.”

Petersburg City Attorney Brian K. Telfair told 8News that the city was made aware of the lawsuit this morning and received a copy of the complaint at around noon. They are currently reviewing the lawsuit and still discussing how to handle the case moving forward.
