RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will be unable to issue birth, marriage, divorce and death certificates on Saturday, January 16 due to necessary infrastructure upgrades to the state system that electronically stores these records.
DMV’s 74 customer service centers will be open as scheduled on January 16 and will be able to conduct all other transactions. However, all DMV offices will be closed Friday, January 15 and Monday, January 18 for state holidays.
DMV offers certified copies of Virginia vital records at all of its customer service centers and mobile offices through a partnership with the state Department of Health’s Division of Vital Records.
The process for obtaining vital records through DMV is the same as doing so directly through the Division of Vital Records. Customers complete an application, submit the required documentation, and pay a fee to the agency. The fee to obtain vital records at DMV is $14.
DMV began offering birth certificates in March 2014. Previously, Virginians who needed a copy of their birth certificate either had to visit the Division of Vital Records in Richmond or wait for a copy to arrive in the mail.
To date, DMV has processed more than 200,000 birth certificate transactions for Virginia-born customers.
DMV added certified copies of marriage, divorce and death records to its slate of vital records services in September 2015. Since then, the agency has processed more than 2,000 requests for marriage, death and divorce records.
