RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Josh Merkel got his first win over Hampden-Sydney as Randolph-Macon’s head coach Wednesday night as the Yellow Jackets prevailed 75-68 in front of a sold-out Crenshaw Gymnasium. Macon led by 16 at one point, but the Tigers tied the game at 66 late to put the issue in doubt. The Jackets then scored the next five points and never again gave up the lead.
Randolph-Macon has now won five of its last six games, countering a 1-5 record to begin the season and bringing the team’s record to 6-6. Hampden-Sydney falls to 9-3.

ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Lamont Moore (Waverly, Va./Tidewater Academy) recorded his third double-double of the season with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while sophomore Mike Silverthorn (Hackettstown, N.J./Blair Academy) nailed a three-pointer with 1:35 remaining to snap a 66-66 tie and give the Yellow Jackets the lead for good as the Randolph-Macon men’s basketball team outlasted Hampden-Sydney 75-68 Wednesday evening in ODAC action in front of a sellout crowd of 1,435 at Crenshaw Gymnasium.
Moore sank a pair of free throws with 5:56 remaining in the second half to give the Yellow Jackets (6-6, 2-1 ODAC) a 66-53 lead. The Tigers (9-3, 1-2 ODAC) scored 13 straight to knot the score at 66. Silverthorn buried a trey from the right corner to put the home team on top 69-66. After H-SC missed a three-pointer, sophomore Daniel Noe (Fairfax, Va./Bishop Ireton) made a layup to give R-MC a 71-66 advantage with 56 seconds left. H-SC’s Andrew Evans had a layup with 46 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to three at 71-68. Noe had another layup with 17 seconds left to push the lead back to five at 73-68. Following a Tiger turnover, junior Michael Taylor (Apex, N.C./Grace Christian) connected on a pair of free throws with seven seconds left to make the final 75-68 as R-MC extended its win streak to four.
Moore and Taylor had layups to start the game as R-MC took a quick 4-0 lead. H-SC used a 9-2 spurt to take a 9-6 lead four minutes into the contest. The Yellow Jackets put together a 20-5 run to take a 26-14 advantage with 10:25 left in the first half. The lead grew to as many as 16 (37-21) before R-MC took a 43-29 lead to the locker room at the break. Moore had 11 points and four boards in the first period.
The Yellow Jackets pushed the lead to 17 at 51-34 with 16:45 left in the contest. H-SC put together a 14-5 run to cut the deficit to eight at 56-48 with 9:25 remaning. Moore and freshman Darryl Williams (Columbia, Md./Glenelg Country) hit three-pointers prior to the two free throws by Moore that gave R-MC a 66-53 lead with just under six minutes remaining.
Taylor finished with 15 points and eight rebounds. Silverthorn had three treys and a free throw for 10 points. Junior Jamie Wilson (West Point, Va./West Point) had nine points and five assists.
Randolph-Macon returns to ODAC action on Saturday, Jan. 9, for a 2 p.m. home contest against Randolph in Crenshaw Gym.
