The 8News Pigskin Picks: Week 17

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) – Last week of the season for Pigskin Picks and it looks as though Robb Crocker is going to take home the title. There was some movement in the standings last week with Will Armbruster leapfrogging Amanda Malkowski after she turned in a 1-7 week. Chip Brierre’s strong week has him in the runner’s up conversation.

As always, feel free to play along at home.

The Orange Bowl: Clemson Tigers vs. Oklahoma Sooners

Pick: Oklahoma Sooners

Clemson has had no business being No. 1. They are not the best team in the nation. I barely have them in the top five.

The Cotton Bowl: Michigan State Spartans vs. Alabama Crimson Tide

Pick: Alabama Crimson Tide

If you are looking for offense, this will not be the game for you.

The Fiesta Bowl: Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. Ohio State Buckeyes

Pick: Ohio State Buckeyes

This is the battle of the overrated and underachieving.

Minnesota Vikings @ Green Bay Packers

Pick: Green Bay Packers

R-E-L-A-X. The Packers are still a team that can get it done.

Baltimore Ravens @ Cincinnati Bengals

Pick: Cincinnati Bengals

I was almost going to pick the Ravens, but then I realized that they are the Ravens.

Washington Redskins @ Dallas Cowboys

Pick: Washington Redskins

Expect to see a lot of backups for both teams.

Philadelphia Eagles @ New York Giants

Pick: New York Giants

I am not going to pile on Chip Kelly, like the rest of the media has. OK, I will…He only has his hubris and massive ego to blame. That team flat out gave up against the Redskins, I don’t expect much against the Giants. At least the loser gets a trip to London next season.

Oakland Raiders @ Kansas City Chiefs

Pick: Oakland Raiders

Oddly enough, I am going to pick against the hottest team in the NFL. The Chiefs have an outside chance of stealing the AFC West title but this is about the time of the year that Andy Reid forgets how to coach a football team.

Will 18

Will Armbruster, 8News Digital Content Producer (last week – 3-5, overall – 80-48)

The Orange Bowl: Clemson Tigers vs. Oklahoma Sooners

Pick: Oklahoma Sooners

The Sooners, who enter the matchup as 4-point favorites, have looked like a new team since suffering that head-scratching loss against Texas,

The Cotton Bowl: Michigan State Spartans vs. Alabama Crimson Tide

Pick: Alabama Crimson Tide

The Crimson Tide has finally figured things out offensively – just hand the ball to Derrick Henry (90 carries, 460 yards the past two games).

The Fiesta Bowl: Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. Ohio State Buckeyes

Pick: Ohio State Buckeyes

I think Ohio State is vulnerable since there’s not in the playoff, but the Buckeyes are still the better team.

Minnesota Vikings @ Green Bay Packers

Pick: Green Bay Packers

Cheeseheads like myself are worried after last week’s embarrassing showing against Arizona. So it is with little confidence that I predict the Packers won’t lose their biggest game of the season at home.

Baltimore Ravens @ Cincinnati Bengals

Pick: Cincinnati Bengals

Cincinnati is still trying to lock up the No. 1 seed, so the Bengals have plenty to play for.

Washington Redskins @ Dallas Cowboys

Pick: Dallas Cowboys

Can you imagine how much fun it would be to watch the back-and-forth banter between fans if the Cowboys sweep the Redskins?

“We swept you guys this season! Go ‘boys!”

“Yea, yea … We’ll see you guys in the playoffs. Oh, wait … “

Philadelphia Eagles @ New York Giants

Pick: New York Giants

The season ends Sunday for both teams, so I’ll ride with the Giants at home.

Oakland Raiders @ Kansas City Chiefs

Pick: Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs have now replaced the Panthers as the hottest team in the NFL. They’ll end the regular season with their ninth win in a row, something no one saw coming after Kansas City started the season 1-5.

Amanda Malkowski, 8News Good Morning Richmond Anchor (last week – 1-7, overall – 79-49)

The Orange Bowl: Clemson Tigers vs. Oklahoma Sooners

Pick: Clemson Tigers

The Cotton Bowl: Michigan State Spartans vs. Alabama Crimson Tide

Pick: Michigan State Spartans

The Fiesta Bowl: Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. Ohio State Buckeyes

Pick: Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Minnesota Vikings @ Green Bay Packers

Pick: Minnesota Vikings

Baltimore Ravens @ Cincinnati Bengals

Pick: Baltimore Ravens

Washington Redskins @ Dallas Cowboys

Pick: Dallas Cowboys

Philadelphia Eagles @ New York Giants

Pick: Philadelphia Eagles

Oakland Raiders @ Kansas City Chiefs

Pick: Kansas City Chiefs

Chip VT 2

Chip Brierre, 8News Weekend Sports Anchor (last week – 6-2, overall – 77-51)

The Orange Bowl: Clemson Tigers vs. Oklahoma Sooners

Pick: Clemson Tigers

All in on Dabo Swinney. Tigers look destined to make it to the title game. We’ll talk national championship chances next week.

The Cotton Bowl: Michigan State Spartans vs. Alabama Crimson Tide

Pick: Alabama Crimson Tide

Two familiar foes enter, Nick Saban will move on because his defense is better than Michigan State’s.

The Fiesta Bowl: Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. Ohio State Buckeyes

Pick: Notre Dame Fighting Irish

I’m out of this thing anyway, plus Petersburg native CJ Prosise should be back and he is electrifying at running back. It will be tight, so Irish by a field goal in the closing moments.

Minnesota Vikings @ Green Bay Packers

Pick: Green Bay Packers

Aaron Roger’s motivation this week after getting sacked in Arizona will influence the win heavily.

Baltimore Ravens @ Cincinnati Bengals

Pick: Cincinnati Bengals

AJ McCarron showed me enough to believe he can get a win in Baltimore. Bengals won’t make the same mistake the Steelers did in overlooking the Ravens.

Washington Redskins @ Dallas Cowboys

Pick: Washington Redskins

Even if Gruden rests his stars, Cowboys are no bueno and the Redskins want to keep their edge heading into the playoffs.

Philadelphia Eagles @ New York Giants

Pick: New York Giants

Both of these teams had horrible years, Chip Kelly was the first to go, will Coughlin follow suit? A win over Philly could make things very interesting in the Meadowlands.

Oakland Raiders @ Kansas City Chiefs

Pick: Kansas City Chiefs

KC has won nine in a row. They ARE the hottest team in the NFL and will be the team nobody wants to play in the AFC playoffs.

Mitch

Mitch Carr, 8News Sports Director (last week – 4-4, overall – 75-53)

The Orange Bowl: Clemson Tigers vs. Oklahoma Sooners

Pick: Clemson Tigers

Tigers’ O gets a lot of pub, but the D is nasty. Big XII teams are soft.

The Cotton Bowl: Michigan State Spartans vs. Alabama Crimson Tide

Pick: Michigan State Spartans

The Sparty D is the best unit remaining of any of the four teams.

The Fiesta Bowl: Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. Ohio State Buckeyes

Pick: Ohio State Buckeyes

What worries me here is that the Buckeyes have quit on each other before they head off to the NFL. Still, I’ll pick the team with more talent.

Minnesota Vikings @ Green Bay Packers

Pick: Minnesota Vikings

This Packer offense is terrible, and I never thought I would say that about an Aaron Rodgers-led unit

Baltimore Ravens @ Cincinnati Bengals

Pick: Cincinnati Bengals

Washington Redskins @ Dallas Cowboys

Pick: Washington Redskins

They’ll probably rest guys, which means you’ll see Colt McCoy instead of Kirk Cousins, but you’ll see Matt Cassell or Kellen Moore on the other side, so give me the ‘Skins.

Philadelphia Eagles @ New York Giants

Pick: Philadelphia Eagles

This game means nothing, so Philly will show up for it.

Oakland Raiders @ Kansas City Chiefs

Pick: Kansas City Chiefs

Hottest team in football.

Kerri O'Brien

Kerri O’Brien, 8News Investigative Reporter (last week – 4-4, overall – 71-57)

The Orange Bowl: Clemson Tigers vs. Oklahoma Sooners

Pick: Clemson Tigers

I just think they are super strong.  Oklahoma is in a weaker division.

The Cotton Bowl: Michigan State Spartans vs. Alabama Crimson Tide

Pick: Alabama Crimson Tide

Alabama – I’m not a fan but they will crush. No contest.

The Fiesta Bowl: Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. Ohio State Buckeyes

Pick: Notre Dame Fighting Irish

This might be more wishful thinking given Kizer’s interceptions this season but Coach says they have been really studying the Buckeyes ground game and focused on stopping it.  I say the luck of the Irish is with them at the Fiesta Bowl.

Minnesota Vikings @ Green Bay Packers

Pick: Minnesota Vikings

As I have been saying, the Packers just look terrible.  Offense is bad!

Baltimore Ravens @ Cincinnati Bengals

Pick: Baltimore Ravens

Hmm…who would have thought the Ravens would beat the Steelers last week?  Certainly not Amanda!  I think the Ravens get a boost from this and the Bengals, who have been struggling recently, continue to struggle.

Washington Redskins @ Dallas Cowboys

Pick: Washington Redskins

Redskins are already in the playoffs and the Cowboys have no hope of getting in so this game does not matter.  Still, I think the Skins win even if they rest some stars as the Cowboys are just embarrassing.

Philadelphia Eagles @ New York Giants

Pick: Philadelphia Eagles

Speaking of embarrassing…these two teams! But I bet we see an Eagles win.  With Chip Kelly gone (insert Kerri victory dance here), who was clearly a thorn in the locker room as we have seen from some recently tweets from players, this team unites again and wins giving hope to new leadership.  Also—have you seen Eli throw lately?

Oakland Raiders @ Kansas City Chiefs

Pick: Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs are looking good.
