Facebook hoax: Mark Zuckerberg is not giving away millions to users

(WFLA) — A Facebook post going viral saying Mark Zuckerberg will give users millions of dollars is a hoax, fact-checking website Snopes.com reports.

The original post reads:

Mark Zuckerberg has announced that he is giving away $45 billion of Facebook stock. What you may not have heard is that he plans to give 10% of it away to people like YOU and ME! All you have to do is copy and paste this message into a post IMMEDIATELY and tag 5-10 of your friends. At midnight PST, Facebook will search through the day’s posts and award 1000 people with $4.5 million EACH as a way of saying thank you for making Facebook such a powerful vehicle for connection and philanthropy.

The origin of the false post started on December 1 when Mark Zuckerberg posted on Facebook announcing the birth of his daughter and that he and his wife will donate 99 percent of their Facebook shares, valued at $45 billion, during their lives.

The new hoax claims that by copy and pasting a post to your page and thanking Zuckerberg could put you in the running for $4.5 million. Some posts also claim that it was announced on “Good Morning America.” This is not true.
