The 8News Pigskin Picks: Week 12

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) – The chase for the title is heating up. Clubhouse leader Robb Crocker had a rough week, going 4-4.

Crocker’s poor performance allowed Amanda Malkowski and Will Armbruster to gain quite a bit of ground – Malkowski is one game out, Armbruster two back. The rest of the field is still in striking distance.

Look for more changes in the standing as the competition gets fiercer. As always, feel free to play along at home.

Robb Crocker, 8News Digital Content Manager (last week – 4-4, overall 59-29)

Duquesne Dukes @ William & Mary Tribe

Pick: William & Mary Tribe

The Tribe cruises against a football program most people do not know exist.

Ohio State Buckeyes @ Michigan Wolverines

Pick: Michigan Wolverines

This game is Michigan’s bowl game and they will come out fired up and ready to play.

Virginia Tech Hokies @ Virginia Cavaliers

Pick: Virginia Tech Hokies

I really wanted to pick Virginia; after all, they do have better playmakers. But Tech has the better coach and QB. Tech will win in the final seconds by three. As I’ve said before, there will be two high-profile head coach openings in the Commonwealth.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish @ Stanford Cardinal

Pick: Stanford Cardinal

Notre Dame is over-rated. There, I said it. I feel much better now.

Carolina Panthers @ Dallas Cowboys

Pick: Carolina Panthers

The fact that Dallas is favored should be motivation enough for the Panthers. When did Tony Romo become an elite NFL QB?

New York Giants @ Washington Redskins

Pick: Washington Redskins

I will probably regret this pick because New York has owned Washington over the past few years but Washington plays well at home, despite the fact that sometimes nearly half the fans are rooting for the visitors.

Buffalo Bills @ Kansas City Chiefs

Pick: Kansas City Chiefs

I think Rex Ryan has the Bills headed in the right direction but his team is running into a team that has overcome injuries and is playing good football in all phases of the game.

New England Patriots @ Denver Broncos

Pick: New England Patriots

This will be a closer game than most think but New England is just that good with Tom Brady behind the wheel.

“I legitimately don’t have a clue.” — Amanda Malkowski

Duquesne Dukes @ William & Mary Tribe

Pick: William & Mary Tribe

I legitimately don’t have a clue.

Ohio State Buckeyes @ Michigan Wolverines

Pick: Michigan Wolverines

This will be a great game, especially after Ohio State just got beaten by MSU. I think Michigan will channel their home team advantage and win.

Virginia Tech Hokies @ Virginia Cavaliers

Pick: Virginia Tech Hokies

This will be another good one. I honestly haven’t picked Tech right all season. Could this be the game?

Notre Dame Fighting Irish @ Stanford Cardinal

Pick: Notre Dame Fighting Irish

This is a toss-up.

Carolina Panthers @ Dallas Cowboys

Pick: Carolina Panthers

Boom.

New York Giants @ Washington Redskins

Pick: New York Giants

Um, Giants, I guess?

Buffalo Bills @ Kansas City Chiefs

Pick: Kansas City Chiefs

This one will be ugly.

New England Patriots @ Denver Broncos

Pick: New England Patriots

The Pats are too good.

Will 11

Will Armbruster, 8News Digital Content Producer (last week – 6-2, overall 57-31)

Duquesne Dukes @ William & Mary Tribe

Pick: William & Mary Tribe

Coming off a tough loss to close the regular season, veteran head coach Jimmye Laycock will have the Tribe ready to play in their playoff opener.

Ohio State Buckeyes @ Michigan Wolverines

Pick: Ohio State Buckeyes

It’s been a rough few weeks for the defending national champions. Don’t ask me why, but I see them righting the ship this weekend against their arch rivals.

Virginia Tech Hokies @ Virginia Cavaliers

Pick: Virginia Tech Hokies

Tech has won 11 in a row over their in-state rivals, and Beamer’s final days are dwindling. No way the Hokies lose this one.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish @ Stanford Cardinal

Pick: Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Notre Dame’s chance of earning a spot in the playoffs rests with the outcome of this game. I think the Irish will get the job done on the road.

Carolina Panthers @ Dallas Cowboys

Pick: Dallas Cowboys

It’s such a trendy pick, but I like the Cowboys here. It’s been a fun ride so far for Carolina, but how long do we honestly expect them to remain unbeaten? Dallas has its QB back and can’t afford many more losses if it hopes to make the playoffs.

New York Giants @ Washington Redskins

Pick: New York Giants

I flipped a coin.

Buffalo Bills @ Kansas City Chiefs

Pick: Buffalo Bills

I’ve come to like and root for the Bills (not so much Rex Ryan, just his players), and think they’re a legit playoff contender. They’re a better team than Kansas City, but will need a sound performance to beat the Chiefs who always play well at home.

New England Patriots @ Denver Broncos

Pick: New England Patriots

I don’t how good Denver’s defense is or if the Broncos are playing at home … I’m not picking Brock Osweiler over Tom Brady.

Mitch

Mitch Carr, 8News Sports Director (last week – 2-6, overall – 52-36)

Duquesne Dukes @ William & Mary Tribe

Pick: William & Mary Tribe

I will admit I did not know Duquesne had a football team, let alone one that won a conference. I’m picking the home team with the good running game and stout defense.

Ohio State Buckeyes @ Michigan Wolverines

Pick: Michigan Wolverines

As Ezekiel Elliott showed us all, the Ohio State team has issues. Jim Harbaugh hasn’t slept in two weeks as he pounds cups of black coffee shirtless in his terrible dad khakis and stares at a picture of Urban Myer, trying desperately to actually stare a hole through it. You know how state troopers always flank head coaches at the postgame handshake to protect them from wild fans? The state troopers will have to protect the wild fans from Harbaugh.

Virginia Tech Hokies @ Virginia Cavaliers

Pick: Virginia Tech Hokies

Twenty-two straight bowl games, 11-straight wins over UVA. I believe the streaks will continue. Luckily for Virginia Tech, even if they lose they could still make a bowl game, since there are just too many bowl games.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish @ Stanford Cardinal

Pick: Notre Dame Fighting Irish

I believe the Irish have superior athletes and they also have much more to play for.

Carolina Panthers @ Dallas Cowboys

Pick: Carolina Panthers

Tony Romo doesn’t make the Cowboys better than the Panthers, no matter what Vegas tells us.

New York Giants @ Washington Redskins

Pick: Washington Redskins

This is a home game coming off a loss, and the ‘Skins have done pretty well in these spots.

Buffalo Bills @ Kansas City Chiefs

Pick: Kansas City Chiefs

Kansas City is one of the hottest teams in the league, and Tyrod Taylor looks worse every game.

New England Patriots @ Denver Broncos

Pick: New England Patriots

Denver is a mess at the quarterback position. If Denver has a shot it’s that the Broncos’ D is stellar and Brady’s offensive line is patchwork right now. I could see them winning a 17-10 game where Brady gets hit every play. I just think the Patriots are better all around.

Chip 3

Chip Brierre, 8News Weekend Sports Anchor (last week – 4-4, overall – 52-36)

Duquesne Dukes @ William & Mary Tribe

Pick: William & Mary Tribe

I don’t know much about Duquesne, I know William & Mary is ready to right the ship after last week’s lost to Richmond. And I imagine they want that shot at revenge next week.

Ohio State Buckeyes @ Michigan Wolverines

Pick: Michigan Wolverines

Buckeyes are a mess internally, Jim Harbaugh is the kind of coach that takes advantage of something like this and his team is very good. At the big house, Big Blue trending, Ohio State dysfunctioning, certainly ripe for an upset!

Virginia Tech Hokies @ Virginia Cavaliers

Pick: Virginia Tech Hokies

I’ve heard rumors and whispers that if Virginia were to beat the Hokies, Mike London could get the benefit of the doubt and stay on for another year. That’s another conversation entirely, and one I don’t think plays out. Last game of the Beamer Era, but his team finds a way to make sure he gets one last Bowl Game to go with his swan song of a career.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish @ Stanford Cardinal

Pick: Notre Dame Fighting Irish

We did a story on CJ Prosise, running back for the Irish who hails from Petersburg. He is the engine that drives this team, and even though Stanford is tough, he’s taken that step into being a legitimate option on draft day. Plus Notre Dame is fighting for its playoff lives right now.

Carolina Panthers @ Dallas Cowboys

Pick: Carolina Panthers

BWAHAHAHAHA the Panthers are underdogs???? Las Vegas your funny.

New York Giants @ Washington Redskins

Pick: Washington Redskins

The Redskins are an entirely different team when they’re at home. In the last four wins at FedEx field, Washington’s defense has limited opponents to about 14 points per game and Kirk Cousins hasn’t thrown an interception. This is a must-win game, the Panthers and Patriot games were, believe it or not, heat check matches. Find out where they are and how to improve. They will improve this weekend.

Buffalo Bills @ Kansas City Chiefs

Pick: Kansas City Chiefs

Bills defense is strong and did get a bad rap from referees vs. the Patriots. However the offense did them no favors. Alex Smith is leading Kansas City to a Wild Card spot, and that Chiefs defense still is menacing.

New England Patriots @ Denver Broncos

Pick: New England Patriots

It’s a sad day when we don’t get a Brady-Manning matchup. Osweiler now has that role. He’s not going to fare well against the Pats, then again he could. If he doesn’t do too much that Denver defense can give him a chance. But who would you rather have down three on a 2-minute 4th quarter game winning drive?

Kerri O'Brien

Kerri O’Brien, 8News Investigative Reporter (last week – 5-3, overall – 48-40)

Duquesne Dukes @ William & Mary Tribe

Pick: William & Mary Tribe

I think last week’s game was uncharacteristic and William & Mary rebounds. The Tribe triumphs!

Ohio State Buckeyes @ Michigan Wolverines

Pick: Michigan Wolverines

Michigan and not just because OSU blew it last week — I think Michigan is the better team.

Virginia Tech Hokies @ Virginia Cavaliers

Pick: Virginia Tech Hokies

Tech pulls out a much needed win. I know they didn’t do it last week and our down a key player but I think they can manage the win over UVA.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish @ Stanford Cardinal

Pick: Notre Dame Fighting Irish

I always go with the luck of the Irish.

Carolina Panthers @ Dallas Cowboys

Pick: Carolina Panthers

Panthers crush the weak Cowboys.  I know Romo is back but they still are horrible.  It was only Miami folks last week!

New York Giants @ Washington Redskins

Pick: Washington Redskins

Cousins is looking good these days, I don’t blame him for Panthers loss. The Panthers are just on fire.

This might be the only time I have picked the Skins this year.

Buffalo Bills @ Kansas City Chiefs

Pick: Kansas City Chiefs

Rex Ryan has disappointed me — I was expecting great D from those Bills.  I unfortunately think Andy Reid’s Chiefs are on an upswing and pull out the win.

New England Patriots @ Denver Broncos

Pick: New England Patriots

Once again I am sure Belichick has spy cams on the new the Broncos new QB Brook Osweiler.
