CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — No one was injured after flames engulfed an apartment complex in Chesterfield Wednesday evening.
The fire occurred shortly before 5:30 p.m. at 5828 Quiet Pine Circle in the River Forest Apartments complex. According to Lt. Jason Elmore with Chesterfield Fire and EMS, crews arrived to find heavy smoke and fire coming from a third floor apartment. All of the occupants had already evacuated the building without injury.
It took crews roughly 30 minutes to mark the fire under control. One unit suffered significant fire damage while five other apartments sustained smoke and water damage.
“I honestly just prayed and probably drove way too fast to get here,” said Kelly Triplett, who left work, frantic to check on her teenage daughter at home.
“I was shaking, I was crying. Once I knew she was okay the rest of this doesn’t really matter.”
A total of 11 occupants will be displaced as result of the fire. They are being assisted by family member, apartment management and The Red Cross.
There were no injuries to any occupants or firefighters during the incident.
Fire Marshals have determined the fire started on the exterior balcony of a third floor apartment as a result of discarded smoking materials.
Fire officials urge the public to make sure that all smoking materials are properly extinguished and discarded in an appropriate receptacle.
