The 8News Pigskin Picks: Week 11

  • RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) – Only one prognosticator had a winning week during Week 10, with Robb Crocker going 5-3. He was able to maintain his three-game cushion as we head down the stretch

Look for more changes in the standing as the competition gets fiercer. As always, feel free to play along at home.

Dinwiddie Generals vs. Hanover Hawks

Pick: Dinwiddie Generals

Too much power from the Generals.

L.C. Bird Skyhawks vs. Hermitage Panthers

Pick: L.C. Bird Skyhawks

Heavyweight match – Bird will outlast the Panthers.

North Carolina Tar Heels @ Virginia Tech Hokies

Pick: North Carolina Tar Heels

The Hokies will play hard, but the Tar Heels are too good.

Michigan State Spartans @ Ohio State Buckeyes

Pick: Ohio State Buckeyes

Ohio State might be looking ahead. This has potential upset written all over it, but I’ll take the safe bet.

Virginia Cavaliers @ Duke Blue Devils

Pick: Duke Blue Devils

Two high-profile coaching jobs will be available in Virginia soon.

William & Mary Tribe @ Richmond Spiders

Pick: Richmond Spiders

The Spiders need a good win to boost their confidence heading into the playoffs.

Washington Redskins @ Carolina Panthers

Pick: Carolina Panthers

Take a step back Redskins fans (me included) – this team has a comeback against the Bucs and blown out the Saints. This is not a division winning resume.

Green Bay Packers @ Minnesota Vikings

Pick: Green Bay Packers

As improved as Minnesota is, I just can’t see  Aaron Rodgers and the Pack dropping four games in a row.

Dinwiddie Generals vs. Hanover Hawks

Pick: Dinwiddie Generals

Hanover beat Dinwiddie 37-28 on the road during the regular season, but the Hawks will be without star QB Clayton Cheetham, who was suspended after being ejected from last week’s playoff opener.

L.C. Bird Skyhawks vs. Hermitage Panthers

Pick: Hermitage Panthers

L.C. Bird has beaten Hermitage in each of their matchups over the previous three seasons en route to winning the state championship. I think Hermitage will finally reverse the trend.

North Carolina Tar Heels @ Virginia Tech Hokies

Pick: North Carolina Tar Heels

There’s no way Virginia Tech loses Frank Beamer’s final home game, right? Wrong. UNC’s offense is unstoppable right now having scored an ACC record 125 points over its last two games.

Michigan State Spartans @ Ohio State Buckeyes

Pick: Ohio State Buckeyes

I feel like the trendy pick here is Michigan State. A lot of experts have expressed concern about the Buckeyes not blowing out opponents the way most expected them to. I think Ohio State makes a statement this weekend.

Virginia Cavaliers @ Duke Blue Devils

Pick: Duke Blue Devils

Mike London’s days in Charlottesville are dwindling, and I think the hot seat gets worse after this weekend. Duke has lost three straight, but could put itself back in position for a solid bowl bid with a win.

William & Mary Tribe @ Richmond Spiders

Pick: Richmond Spiders

The No. 7 ranked Tribe have essentially locked up a playoff berth while No. 14 Richmond could use a win to boost its playoff resume.

Washington Redskins @ Carolina Panthers

Pick: Carolina Panthers

I’m not buying Cam Newtown and Co. as Super Bowl contenders just yet, but their good enough to beat Washington at home and remain unbeaten.

Green Bay Packers @ Minnesota Vikings

Pick: Green Bay Packers

My Packers haven’t looked so good the last few weeks, but everyone needs to just R-E-L-A-X!  The Pack will snap out of their recent funk this week and regain control of the NFC North.

Dinwiddie Generals vs. Hanover Hawks

Pick: Dinwiddie Generals

Hanover QB Clayton Cheatham is suspended due to an ejection for two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties against Louisa. This makes the Hawks a lot more one dimensional. Hanover went 5-3 while Cheatham was injured this year. It will still be a good game, but I think the Generals have more offensive firepower and Hanover’s offense won’t be able to keep up without Cheatham.

L.C. Bird Skyhawks vs. Hermitage Panthers

Pick: L.C. Bird Skyhawks

Bird is the best team in the area, and I think Saturday morning we’ll all be shocked that this game wasn’t close at all.

North Carolina Tar Heels @ Virginia Tech Hokies

Pick: North Carolina Tar Heels

Heavy emotions in Blacksburg…heavier scoring for UNC. The Tar Heels’ defense is pretty good too.

Michigan State Spartans @ Ohio State Buckeyes

Pick: Ohio State Buckeyes

I give the coaching edge to Urban Meyer. Neither team has impressed this year, but the Buckeyes have the better coach and the better talent.

Virginia Cavaliers @ Duke Blue Devils

Pick: Duke Blue Devils

I can’t pick UVA until they show me something.

William & Mary Tribe @ Richmond Spiders

Pick: William & Mary Tribe

The Spiders’ strength on defense is in stopping the pass, not the run. The Tribe has two great backs. Advantage green and old gold.

Washington Redskins @ Carolina Panthers

Pick: Carolina Panthers

Cam Newton will dance if you don’t stop him.

Green Bay Packers @ Minnesota Vikings

Pick: Minnesota Vikings

The Pack isn’t the same without Jordy Nelson as they play teams with better pass rushes, we’re finding out Aaron Rodgers is mortal. The Packers are also hardly trying to run the ball to help him out. The Vikings have a stout D and the best running back in the game.

Chip Brierre, 8News Weekend Sports Anchor (last week – 3-5, overall – 48-32)

Dinwiddie Generals vs. Hanover Hawks

Pick: Dinwiddie Generals

The Hawks had to rely on Clayton Cheatham to overcome Louisa Co. last week. He also has to sit this one out because of a one-game suspension handed down by the VHSL after being ejected in that Louisa game. He is talented but needs to keep his head on straight to stay on the field and help his team. Bazala can do the job fine, but Cheatham adds another dimension… passing. Although Hanover beat the Generals at Dinwiddie, they got a gutsy win over Monacan last week and look to have some fire heading into this Friday night showdown.

L.C. Bird Skyhaws vs. Hermitage Panthers

Pick: L.C. Bird Skyhawks

It’s as simple as this folks; both teams are LEGIT, state title contenders. The problem is they have to go through each other every year since seven seasons ago. It’s a coin flip, Hermitage has the better quarterback and offense and Bird has the better defense. The old mantra is defense wins championships; I’m a true believer of that. In their 11 games, David Bedwell’s defense has only given up a combined 25 points, with no team ever getting past 7 points in each game that one did score. Just like Alabama, I never pick against Bird.

North Carolina Tar Heels @ Virginia Tech Hokies

Pick: Virginia Tech Hokies

An enthusiastic Va. Tech pick here because it is Frank Beamer’s final home game at Lane Stadium as the head coach of Hokies football. He built Lane Stadium, he built Virginia Tech, and he built southwest Virginia as a legitimate football landscape. After 29 years at the helm, leaving so many Hokie fans (and Miami fans like myself, though still raw about some) moments to remember, the fans, the players, the coaches and the entire area rally one last time for their ole’ ball coach to send him out of Lane Stadium with a W. Magical endings always are the best anyways!

Michigan State Spartans @ Ohio State Buckeyes

Pick: Ohio State Buckeyes

Buckeyes biggest test to date, next one is Michigan but this is about this weekend. J.T. Barrett is back and still looking good, Ezekiel Elliott is a beast and the Ohio State defense is loaded with NFL talent. Sparty will give them a run, but ultimately Urban Meyer keeps his team on the path to another college football playoff berth.

Virginia Cavaliers @ Duke Blue Devils

Pick: Virginia Cavaliers

I don’t think this is a great pick — UVA is in the dumps after missing on a 4th straight bowl game and the looming cloud of Mike London’s future with the program. That’s how we view it outside of the locker room. Inside, I’ve got a feeling the team has had enough and wills their way over Duke on the road. Blue Devils are good, but they’re trending downward after “The Return” (Already got the memento shirt!). Not only does that give this team something to hang their hat on, but also snaps a three year road game losing streak, which is a start.

William & Mary Tribe @ Richmond Spiders

Pick: Richmond Spiders

The Tribe are on a roll coming into Robins Stadium this Saturday as they have locked at least a share of the CAA Title. All they can do is win it outright and are more than likely playoff bound. Richmond on the other hand is a desperate team, even if they won’t use that word to describe their current situation. Playoffs for the Spiders is likely, but a loss to drop three in a row doesn’t look good for the selection committee. They beat William & Mary last year on the road to preserve their playoff spot and share of the conference title; I believe they get the job done sticking to what got them to the top of the CAA in the first place.

Washington Redskins @ Carolina Panthers

Pick: Carolina Panthers

Cam Newton has reached that elite quarterback status. He rightfully belongs in the conversation now with Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers for best in the NFL this season. Carolina’s defense is the best in the NFL led by Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis. They are unbeaten and at home. The last time Washington faced a situation like this one was two weeks ago, we all remember how that went.

Green Bay Packers @ Minnesota Vikings

Pick: Green Bay Packers

Vikings have surprised all of us here at 8News. All around they are a well-balanced team on both sides of the ball which explains why they currently hold the top spot in the NFC North. Teddy Bridgewater is becoming the quarterback Minnesota envisioned when he was drafted two years ago, thanks to Adrian Peterson’s resurgence. I won’t hold my breath to say they are the best team in that division though, that belongs to Aaron Rodgers and the Packers even if they aren’t playing to that standard of late. In big moments, Rodgers is at his best, and this is a must win for the Cheeseheads.

Dinwiddie Generals vs. Hanover Hawks

Pick: Hanover Hawks

These two teams have already met up and Hanover won!  I say they do it again.

L.C. Bird Skyhawks vs. Hermitage Panthers

Pick: L.C. Bird Skyhawks

I say LC Bird…Now this is really tough two 11-0 teams. I am just going with a feeling.

North Carolina Tar Heels @ Virginia Tech Hokies

Pick: North Carolina Tar Heels

UNC– #17 ranking, I think it’s legit. UNC Crushes.

Michigan State Spartans @ Ohio State Buckeyes

Pick: Ohio State Buckeyes

Going with Ohio State…it will be a good game but OH pulls it out, they’re not in the top three for nothing.

Virginia Cavaliers @ Duke Blue Devils

Pick: Duke Blue Devils

I just don’t have much faith in UVA this year, sorry.

William & Mary Tribe @ Richmond Spiders

Pick: William & Mary

UR is coming off two losses; I think they continue to struggle now.

Washington Redskins @ Carolina Panthers

Pick: Carolina Panthers

Despite Kirk Cousins fantastic week I think that was an anomaly and I think they just don’t have what it takes to stop this fantastic Panthers team.

Green Bay Packers @ Minnesota Vikings

Pick: Green Bay Packers

Even though the Packers are struggling this season, the Vikings are struggling more.
