Washington, D.C. (AP) – Virginia was ranked sixth in the newest Associated Press men’s basketball poll before tipping off against George Washington. The Cavaliers likely will fall out of the top 10 next Monday following their 73-68 loss to the Colonials in Washington.
Patricio Garino and Tyler Cavanaugh each scored 18 points for GW, which took control with a 10-0 run in the second half. Gariano began the spurt with a three-point play that put George Washington ahead 57-55. Garino added a tip-in and an assist on Cavanaugh’s layup before Cavanaugh hit two free throws to make it 64-55 with 5:24 remaining.
Virginia fell to 1-1 despite Malcolm Brogdon’s 28 points and eight rebounds.
