RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — This Saturday marks the beginning of general firearm deer hunting season. One local group is hoping hunters may think of others when they are in the woods.
At the break of dawn Saturday morning, deer hunters all across the state will take to the woods hoping to bag a trophy. But this year, Hunters for the Hungry hopes you may bag a deer to donate.
“There is a tremendous need, the goal is to raise over 300,000,” said Bob Strepka with Green Top Sporting Goods who is collecting deer for Hunters For The Hungry.
Last year donations hit a 14-year low. Hunters For The Hungry was down more than 100,000 pounds of venison.
“For whatever reason we’re not getting the amount of deer meat that we anticipated,” said Strepka.
This year, Green Top Sporting Goods is partnering with Hunters for the Hungry to drum up donations.
“We have a contest we’re running and giving away some gift cards from Green Top,” said Strepka.
Top prize is a $1,000 gift card all for giving back to the community. The processed venison will make it to organizations such as FeedMore. They handle making sure it gets to people who need it the most.
“The prices of red meat has skyrocketed in the past five years, so for us getting fresh meat definitely means a lot,” Jackie Farell with FeedMore said. “Getting the donations from Hunters For The Hungry especially venison it’s like a free for all I mean they clamor for it.”
