Study: Drinking Champagne boosts memory

(KOIN) — Tired of waiting for a special occasion to bust out the bubbly?

Well, according to a new study, drinking one to two glasses of Champagne a week can help strengthen your memory and prevent the onset of dementia and Alzheimer’s.

Researchers at the University of Reading in Great Britain recently found that phenolic compounds in Champagne improve spatial memory, which is important in navigation and performing complex tasks and calculations.

In their study, scientists gave rats a moderate dose of Champagne each day for six weeks, equivalent to a glass-and-a-half a week for humans.

“Daily supplementation with low-to-moderate dose of Champagne for sixweeks led to an improvement in memory,” Dr. Giulia Corona said.

Dr. Corona went on to explain that phenolic compounds in Champagne, “improve the communication between cells and encourage nerves that carry electrical signals in the brain to regenerate.”

Researchers hope to translate their findings into concrete recommendations for people in the near future.

This is the latest of many studies into the potential health benefits of moderate alcohol consumption.
