A push to close the state’s youth prisons

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Dozens will be rallying outside the General Assembly Friday calling for juvenile justice reform. “Incarcerating Our Kids” has been an on-going 8News Investigation for several weeks now.

Community activists argue that locking up kids doesn’t work. They say these prisons are expensive, do little to reform and often lead to a lifetime behind bars.

8News has found the recidivism rate is at about 80 percent.

8News Investigator Kerri O’Brien will be at Friday’s rally talking with participants — she’s also uncovered new information about a plan to close two youth prisons in our area.
