RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Planned Parenthood supporters joined Dan Gecker, Senator Mark Warner and Governor Terry McAuliffe Sunday in a “Get Out the Vote” rally Sunday.
Planned Parenthood has been in the middle of a scandal for the last couple of months, some want to stop federal funding for the organization.
“That’s what Planned Parenthood is here to do–expand healthcare access for over 400,000 Virginians,” said Nia Bentall, with Planned Parenthood Virginia PAC.
But many want to restrict the group—after anti-abortion activists released undercover videos, accusing Planned Parenthood of breaking federal laws by selling tissue and organs from aborted fetuses.
“The political agenda behind them was to restrict access to women’s health care, and our supporters aren’t going to let that happen here in Virginia,” said Bentall.
Efforts to pull federal funding for Planned Parenthood has increased ever since.
“I don’t think Planned Parenthood should get a red cent from a taxpayer. I’ve always believed that, i voted for that before those disgusting videos came out. But I believe we have to do our oversight,” said Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan in an interview with CNN.
The House has formed a special committee to investigate.
Here at home, Planned Parenthood organizers say they’re doing everything to make sure people continue to get their services.
“This Planned Parenthood has been involved in the state level because we see so many attacks on reproductive justice and healthcare access on the state level, it’s really important for us to be involved in the state level,” said Bentall.
A spokesperson from the Family Foundation sent 8News this statement as a response:
Most reasonable people are disgusted by what’s been uncovered at Planned Parenthood. But Terry McAullife, who took nearly $2 million from PP to get elected governor and Dan Gecker are so extreme on abortion they welcome the help of this scandal ridden business. Planned Parenthood’s scandal of profiting from selling the body parts of late term unborn babies they abort is so appalling even the Democratic candidate running for the House of Delegates in Hanover resigned from Planned Parenthood’s board to distance herself.”
