Randolph-Macon stings Shenandoah 31-13

The following comes directly from Randolph-Macon College:

ASHLAND, Va. – Freshman Joe McBride (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) threw for 174 yards and two touchdowns, while senior John Byrd (Manassas Park, Va./Manassas Park) rushed 24 times for 125 yards as the Randolph-Macon football team posted a 31-13 ODAC victory over Shenandoah Saturday afternoon.

The Yellow Jackets (2-6, 1-4 ODAC) held a 434-244 advantage in total offense, as well as an advantage of 38:19 to 21:41 in time of possession over the Hornets (4-4, 1-4 ODAC).

On its second possession of the game, R-MC drove 49 yards in 10 plays, as junior Dom Kaopua (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) burrowed in from one yard out to give the home team a 7-0 lead with 3:48 remaining in the first period.

Following a Yellow Jacket fumble, the Hornets went 93 yards in 11 plays to notch the tying score with just under eight minutes remaining in the second quarter.

R-MC took the ensuing kickoff and drove 75 yards in seven plays, as McBride hit junior Steven Quinn (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) with a three-yard scoring pass in the corner of the end zone on a fourth-and-two play to give the Yellow Jackets a 14-7 lead with 3:55 left in the half.

Junior Jacob Silva (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) snagged an interception on the R-MC 35 and McBride hit freshman Christian Redman (North Chesterfield, Va./James River) with a 25-yard scoring strike to give the Yellow Jackets a 21-7 lead with 29 seconds left in the half. SU was able to move to the R-MC 16, but an incomplete pass on a faked field goal and an incomplete pass on the quarter’s final play gave the home team a 21-7 advantage at intermission.

The Hornets had an impressive drive to start the second half, going 75 yards in 17 plays to make it 21-13 after missing the extra point with nine minutes to go in the period.

After the kickoff went out of bounds, R-MC moved 65 yards in 12 plays as freshman Yonis Blanco (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) scored from one yard out to give the Yellow Jackets a 28-13 lead.

In the fourth quarter, junior Seth Yurgel (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland) hit a 20-yard field goal with 3:23 left to make the final 31-13.

McBride completed 13 of 16 passes in his second collegiate start. Seven different receivers caught passes.

R-MC held SU to its lowest point total of the season. The Hornets were averaging nearly 36 points per game heading into the contest. The Yellow Jacket defense held the ODAC’s leading rusher, Cedrick Delaney, to less than half of his season average of 128.7. Delaney gained just 62 yards, while the Hornets had 74 total rushing yards.

Silva, junior Deshaun Rogers (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) and freshman JJ Hill (Roanoke, Va./William Fleming) each had seven tackles to lead the Yellow Jackets. Silva had three pass breakups to go along with his interception. R-MC had seven tackles for loss, including three tackles for loss.
