RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Now’s the time to get to the doctor to prepare for flu season as physicians across the country are warning patients that there’s a FluMist shortage.
“We don’t know how bad it’s going to be yet, the company has been very closed mouth about it,” Henrico pediatrician David Arkin told 8News. “We know they lost about 15-percent of their inventory because the vaccine was too potent, too powerful. I don’t know if there’s any side-effects from that, but the FDA would not release it.”
According to Arkin, physicians do not know whether to order vaccines or how much to order.
“So doctors are in a quandary across the country. Nobody knows if they should be ordering anymore flu shots; nobody knows how much of the FluMist they’re going to get.”
Arkin said it’s mostly about personal preference because both the shot and mist are effective — and either is better than doing nothing at all.
So, if you’re a parent, Arkin has the following advice:
“People who have a preference for the FluMist should try to get in a little earlier this year before the doctors start running out.”
