Police: Christopher Columbus statue in Byrd Park vandalized

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A statue honoring Christopher Columbus in Richmond’s Byrd Park was vandalized on Columbus Day.

The second Monday in October is Columbus Day, which is recognized in the Commonwealth and across the nation.

Richmond Police tell 8News that the statue was vandalized with graffiti either late Monday night or early Tuesday morning.

The statue had “the original lies” and “genocide” spray painted on it. The vandalism could be considered a felony if the damage to the statue costs more than $1,000.

The Department of Public Works is responsible for cleaning up the statue.
