Virginia Beach upgrading and adding cameras at Oceanfront

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) – Virginia Beach is upgrading and adding surveillance cameras at the Oceanfront.

Local media reports that the $7.5 million project includes replacing 19 existing analog cameras in the resort area with digital ones. Six additional digital cameras will be installed by July 2016. By 2018, the city plans to have a total of 85 cameras in place.

Police Lt. Bob Christman says there also are plans to access cameras in the city’s public schools and other municipal areas.

Christman says the project’s ultimate goal is to maximize police coverage across the city.

He says the police department also plans to get body cameras for officers.
