HARRISONBURG, Va. – Fresh off its fifth straight victory to open the season, the James Madison football team was ranked fifth in both the STATS FCS Top 25 and FCS Coaches Poll, which were released on Monday.
The Dukes improved to 5-0 (2-0 CAA) on Saturday with a 38-20 win at home against Stony Brook, marking the first time in JMU’s 44-year program history that it started a season 5-0.
Madison leads the nation in scoring offense (47.8), total offense (640.8), third-down conversions (56.7%) and first downs (164), while also ranking second in rushing offense (343.8) and sixth in completion percentage (68.7%).
JMU moved up one spot this week from sixth in the STATS FCS Top 25 while it remained steady at No. 5 in the FCS Coaches Poll.
Jacksonville State, Coastal Carolina, North Dakota State and Illinois State, respectively, sit ahead of the Dukes in the media poll, though the order stands as Coastal, NDSU, JSU and ISU in the coaches poll.
The Dukes are one of four Colonial Athletic Association schools to be ranked in the polls this week, as they’re joined by Villanova (14/16), Richmond (16/18) and New Hampshire (21/22). Four other league schools are receiving votes in at least one poll.
JMU returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 10, when it hits the road to face Towson at 3 p.m. The game will be televised on Comcast SportsNet and coverage on the JMU/nTelos Wireless Sports Network will begin at 2 p.m. The 2015 season is presented by CarMax.
