Case against former Petco workers charged in dog’s death continued

MIDLOTHIAN, Va. (WRIC) — The case against two former Petco workers charged with animal cruelty was continued Wednesday.

31-year-old Suzanne Jensen and 28-year-old Rebecca Witherspoon both face animal neglect charges in connection to the death of a dog that was groomed at the Westchester Commons Petco in Midlothian on May 29.

Out of nowhere, Allison Marks had lost her best friend.

“I’m still not past that hurt,” she said of the incident.

She had dropped off her two-year-old golden retriever, Colby Jack, and when she returned to pick him up, she says she was told Colby had died from a heat stroke. Marks believes that after Colby was groomed, he was left in a drying cage.

“It’s like losing a child,” Marks said. “If it can keep it from happening to somebody else’s dog, that’s a big plus.”

Petco maintained no heat was used to dry Colby, but did accept responsibility for his death.

Both former employees are expected back in court November 17.
