Reverend Al Sharpton visits Petersburg Sunday to deliver a message

PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) — Civil rights activist Reverend Al Sharpton visited Petersburg on Sunday with a message “to take charge in your life.”

Sharpton spoke at Gillfield Baptist Church about the violence happening around the nation.

“I know times are hard, but times have been harder than this and we were not shooting each other. And we must openly and very boldly challenge that,” said Sharpton.

Sharpton also voiced his opinion about the recent Republican presidential debate saying the nation faces some challenges ahead with the election, but not to get weary.

“History is decided by those that don’t give up, not by those that succumb,” said Sharpton.

Sharpton is headed back to New York, but the congregation at Gillfield Baptist Church says his words will stay with them forever.
