Great 8 Happenings: Richmond 2015 kicks off and so much more

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The UCI Road World Championships kicks off this weekend. Richmond 2015 is a nine-day cycling competition. 450,000 spectators and 1,000 athletes from all over the world are expected to come to Central Virginia for the race. The opening ceremony is Friday, team trials are Saturday, and men and women trials are Sunday. Even though the bike race is going to be a huge event in Richmond, there are plenty of other things to do around the city.

FRIDAY —

  • UCI Road World Championships Opening Ceremony: Celebrate the UCI Road World Championships in Richmond at the Official Opening Ceremony on Brown’s Island.  See local and international dignitaries, Team USA and enjoy performances by Rayvon Owen and the Richmond Symphony.
    • When: September 18, 6:30 p.m.
    • Where: Brown’s Island, Richmond
  • Pump It Up: Do you need a little time to yourselves? Take your kids to Pump It Up and let them enjoy jumping, sliding, bouncing, and other activities in a giant inflatable arenas. Meanwhile, indulge your sweetheart at any of the area’s restaurants, catch a movie nearby, get some shopping done, or spend your evening any way you want, all on your own!
    • When: September 18, 6:30 p.m. – 10:30 p.m.
    • Where: 9555 Kings Charter Drive, Ashland
    • Ages: 4- 12-years-old
    • How much: $20 per child/$15 per sibling

SATURDAY —

  • UCI Team Trials: Fans can be watch the UCI Road World Championships Team Trials at the start zone which is located at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden.
    • When: September 19, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
    • Where: 1800 Lakeside Avenue, Richmond
  • Fig Tree 5K: Fig Tree Therapy is a group of mental health clinicians dedicated to ministering to the mental health needs of individuals and families. This year, they are extending their arms of community support by holding their first 5K in support of Richmond Autism Integrated Network. R.A.I.N. is an organization that offers fun, skilled-based activities to give children with autism the tools they needs to better understand and navigate the often confusing and inconsistent world around them.
    • When: September 19, 7 a.m. – 11 a.m.
    • Where: Innsbrook 4901 Lake Brook Drive, Glen Allen, VA 23060
  • The Color Run: The vibrant race is coming to Richmond this Saturday. Enjoy running through blast of paint individually or with a team.
    • When: Gates open at 7:30 a.m., race starts at 9 a.m.
    • Where: Richmond International Raceway, 600 E. Laburnum Avenue, Richmond, VA 23222
    • Price: Group $39.50 & Individual $45

SUNDAY —

  • UCI Men and Women Team Trials: Just like the team trials, fans will be able to watch the men and women trials as well from the fan zone.
    • When: September 20, Women’s at 11:30 a.m. – 12:55 p.m. & Men’s 1:30 p.m. – 3:35 p.m.
    • Where: 1800 Lakeside Avenue, Richmond
