HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Students at Godwin High School are mourning the loss of one of their own.
A family friend says Tyler Wentz died over the weekend following a body surfing accident while on vacation in North Carolina.
Wentz was a junior and this would have been his first year playing football at Godwin.
“He was a wonderful, ideal character,” said teammate Wesley Dugger. “Super nice to all of us — no matter what you said to him. Super nice and so we are having a big push for Tyler and his family and we are here to support them always.”
“It was tough,” explained Justin Spencer, another one of Wentz’s teammates. “It doesn’t feel real. It was a difficult day today.”
Grief counselors are on hand at the school during this difficult time.
Students at Godwin wore white on Monday in honor of Wentz. The hashtag #TeamTyler was also created online, allowing fellow students and friends to share thoughts and prayers.
Friends are planning a candle light vigil for him on Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Godwin’s football field. Loved ones are also planning a celebration of life Saturday at Tuckahoe Little League Field #9. A time has not yet been announced.
