NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — The public is being asked to help name a giraffe calf recently born at the Virginia Zoo.
The zoo says the male masai giraffe weighed 152 pounds and was 75 inches tall when it was born on July 23.
The public can vote online at the zoo’s website (click here for the link) for one of 14 names chosen by the zoo’s staff. Proposed names include Gilbert, Charlie, Sebastian and Jabari, which is Swahili for brave or fearless.
Voting will continue through Sept. 6.
Virginia Zoo executive director Greg Bockheim says in a news release that zoo officials hope the naming contest will get people interested in the giraffe and its native habitat.
Bockheim says masai giraffe are the tallest land mammals on the planet and are the largest subspecies of giraffe.
