HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A mentor program is expanding this year and they are in need of mentors.
Team Excel is a student mentoring program that’s part of former NFL Fullback Michael Robinson’s Excel to Excellence Foundation. The program uses a reverse Fantasy Football concept to get students to excel academically, personally and encourages community service. The Team Excel members are athletes and they gain points for their GPA, school attendance, and community service. The group with the highest score wins prizes.
“We put our team together and battle other teams in our class,” said Christian Jones, Team Excel Member and Varina High School student.
The program has seen improvements in student’s grades.
“I went from being A, B, C student to an A, B student just from motivation,” said Jones.
Jason Morvan is a team coach and last year he worked with 8th graders to help them reach their full potential. He’s spent part of his summer training with the Virginia Mentoring Partnership to learn how to motivate his group even more now that they’ll be in the 9th grade.
“It doesn’t take very long to influence and change a child’s life. You just gotta show up,” said Morvan.
The program is usually available to 9th- 12th graders, but this year the program will include 7th and 8th graders. Because of this expansion, Team Excel is looking for more mentors.
