Caitlyn Jenner costume creates controversy

(WRIC) — With Halloween right around the corner, you may have started to come up with costume ideas. A certain costume has caused an uproar on social media.

The “Call Me Caitlyn” costume is a replica of the outfit Jenner wore on the cover of Vanity Fair. The costume comes with a padded top, matching shorts, a wig and a sash that says “Call Me Caitlyn.”

The costume is selling for $74.99 at major costume retail stores like Spirit Halloween and AnytimeCostumes.com.

“At Spirit Halloween, we create a wide range of costumes that are often based upon celebrities, public figures, heroes and superheroes,” said Lisa Barr, senior director of marking at Spirit Halloween. “We feel that Caitlyn Jenner is all of the above and that she should be celebrated. The Caitlyn Jenner costume reflects just that.”

A petition on change.org asks Spirit Halloween not to sell the costume and so far the petition has about 4,000 supporters. The petition says, “Do not turn Caitlyn Jenner into a costume. Your profit will only lead to greater transphobia and marginalization of an already at risk community.”
