Business owner works to stop ‘Portland Pooper’

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — It’s isn’t pretty. In fact, it’s pretty gross.

A Southeast Portland business owner set up a small surveillance camera that allegedly caught a man using a nearby parking lot as his own personal bathroom.

“I’m really curious what the circumstances are as to why he’s doing this,” the business owner, who wished to remain anonymous, told 8News sister station KOIN 6 News.

It’s enough to make anyone scratch their head: a man loosening his belt, leaning up against an office building near SE 58th and Powell and doing his business.

According to the business owner, it’s happened at least 3 other times in the last month.

“I stuck a camera in the window,” he said. “It happened quickly and I was amazed.”

The man even brought his own toilet paper.

After a few minutes, he seemed to notice the camera.

“He’s got to know something is going on,” the business owner said. “He squints and he’s paying attention.”

A flyer was made up, dubbing the man the “Portland Pooper”.

“We’re hoping to put up some posters and just see if there’s anyone in the local region who knows who this is,” the business owner said.

KOIN 6 News took a copy of the flyer and began asking around. An employee at a nearby gas station quickly recognized the man.

“I think he’s always over there in the bushes taking a dump and looking for pop cans,” Sanchindra Nath said. “I mean, he’s a creep though. He has to be to do something like that.”

Others in the area hope it’s something that’s stopped sooner rather than later.

“It’s pretty weird because we’ve got a couple of schools and a park here,” Shawn Peralta said. “There are a lot of families around here and this is not the kind of thing you want to see.”

The business owner said he filed a police report on Monday.

According to police, the man could face charges related to public indecency and offensive littering.
