#8SportsBlitz Top 10: Preseason edition

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — It is always a tough task to choose the best ten teams in an area full of good ones. Chip Brierre and I start early in August visiting as many teams as we can get to in the month before the season starts. We talk to the coaches and players and then talk to each other about who we believe will be good. We base our judgements on last year’s record and how many starters return from a good or bad year. For example, Manchester had the best season in school history in 2014, but they have very few returning starters from that team, so you won’t find them on our list. Conversely, a team like Henrico made a playoff run in 2014, and the Warriors return almost everyone. We expect them to be good, and you’ll find them on our list.

The rankings are subjective an based on having never seen these 2015 teams take the field, so feel free to disagree with everything on this list. Just keep checking in weekly to watch it change!

  1. L.C. Bird Skyhawks: The back-to-back-to-back VHSL State Champions are stacked again
  2. Hermitage Panthers: The Panthers return most of their starters and had plenty in reserve anyway
  3. Highland Springs Springers: Few teams can touch the Springers when it comes to skill position talent. Expect points-aplenty.
  4. Benedictine Cadets: The Cadets are more than Scott Bracey, but they have him too. Depth is their only worry.
  5. Hanover Hawks: Clayton Cheetham is like a mini Tim Tebow, and the Hawks return most of their starters from a playoff team.
  6. Monacan Chiefs: The Chiefs lose fewer than five major contributors from a 2014 squad that could’ve been the 4A State Champ.
  7. Cosby Titans: Size is never the problem at Cosby, but this year the Titans believe they have speed along with that size.
  8. Henrico Warriors: Almost everyone is back from one of 2014’s biggest surprises.
  9. Thomas Dale Knights: Trent Williams will star on both sides of the ball, and the Knights will be tough to deal with in the trenches.
  10. Dinwiddie Generals: The Generals believe they’ll make a run this year with young but experienced players.
