The Best of Richmond 2015: Best Men’s Shop

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — You name it – from suits to sports coats, dress slacks and casual slacks – Franco’s on Lakeside Avenue has it.

The charming Italian owners have been keeping fellows in style for 40 years. That’s why Francos is this year’s Best Men’s Shop in Richmond.

“We try hard to bring the best quality, the best value to the customer,” owner Kevin Reardon said.

The store has been open since 1972, when founder Franco Ambrogi wanted to open his own tailor shop.

“I just felt like I needed more than just that, and my wife and I decided to start our own business,” Ambrogi said.

It didn’t take long to catch on in Richmond.

“Once people gt to know who I was and what I was doing, it was a home run,” Ambrogi added.

It’s a wonderland for fine men’s clothing, even having the fun stuff for a lighter side.

“We carry everything from very traditional clothing to European clothing or European type clothing with a slim fit,” Ambrogi said.

Reardon has owned Franco’s for five years. His goal is to dress the gentleman, the young gentleman after him and after that.

“We definitely want to take that young man and evolve him into a long term customer,” Reardon said. “We see that now. We have some men whose father may have brought them in 20 years ago, 30 years ago and in some cases bringing their sons in now.”

Reardon says the real magic happens upstairs in the tailor shop.

“We alter what we sell, just about every garment we sell has to have some alteration done to it,” Reardon said. “Don’t have the specific numbers, but a lot go through our tailor shop over a number of days.”

And the employees love to work here.

“I’m very comfortable here,” said Derrick Richardson. “As long as Franco’s is around, I’ll be around.”

At the end of the day, it’s about one goal.

“Our focus is that everyone comes to the store, they have to have an experience and they must leave with a smile on their face,” Ambrogi said.

So if you’re looking for the best men’s fine clothing in the City of Richmond, you already know where to go: Franco’s on Lakeside Ave.
