RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — When Richmonders want to get fit with a little fun, they come to Boho Cycle Studio.
“It’s part dance party, part great cardio workout, part sort of social hour,” Mary Faulk says.
Riders like Kaity Kasper snap in, saddle up and set off.
“I like to say that I feel like I’m going to a friend’s house after work instead of coming to spin class and I think that’s true. I think that’s part of why it’s so addictive here.”
Co-owners Annmarie Grohs and Shannon Greenwood say that’s the feel they’re going for here.
“Everybody can do it and that is what we try to convey,” Grohs said.
The spinning and cycling studio has been around for less than two years, but has already become a fitness favorite. Fans say the good music doesn’t hurt either.
“Music is everything,” Greenwood said.
“I like to do a lot of hip-hop, techno, throw in a little 90s Pearl Jam every once in a while, instructor Kristy Santelli says. “So, keeping it fun.”
Instructors get their riders in the zone throughout the workout, often adding some entertainment to the exercise.
“We’ve done like a neon ride where everyone dresses in neon colors and we get big black lights and it just makes the room look really different and cool.”
Other times, it’s another kind of ‘spinning’ that adds to the class.
“We literally bring a live DJ from one of the local clubs to come and DJ the ride.”
Grohs says not to let all the excitement intimidate you, though! Riders pedal at their own pace.
“I think when people realize they can control the workout and how it goes so that it feels right instead of what you’re always being told to do, it’s a little bit less alarming to jump on the bike and go for it.”
And those who take the classes don’t regret it.
“I always feel better when I leave than when I came here,” rider Mary Faulk said.
